Pirates World Integrates Chainlink VRF to Help Power Random NFT Generation
We’re excited to announce that Pirates World — an NFT game based on an oracle economy — has integrated Chainlink Verifiable Random Function (VRF) on Binance Smart Chain mainnet. By integrating the industry-leading decentralized oracle network, we now have access to a tamper-proof and auditable source of randomness needed to mint NFT ships and pirates of different rarities based on specific odds. Ultimately this creates a more exciting, transparent, and fraud-proof user experience, as users can independently audit the minting process underlying in-game NFTs to verify that no pirates of the sea are manipulating the process.
Pirates World will allow users to face dangerous expeditions in the crypto sea in search of the precious RGOLD. By entering Pirates World, users can enjoy a broad ecosystem where they will be able to sell their NFTs on an internal marketplace, as well as on partner NFT marketplaces such as BakerySwap. In addition, users will be able to participate in a wide range of events, such as seasonsal NFT hunts, guild wars, and nemesis events. Users will also be able to participate in different metaverse experiences where Pirates World has museums, stands for AMAs, and conducts special NFT auctions connected to different blockchain marketplaces.
In order to help ensure the random generation of rarity-based NFTs is transparent and unequivocally fair, we need access to a secure random number generator (RNG) that any user could independently audit. However, RNG solutions for smart contracts require several security considerations to prevent manipulation and ensure system integrity. For instance, RNG solutions derived from blockchain data like block hashes can be exploited by miners/validators, while off-chain RNG solutions derived from off-chain APIs are opaque and don’t provide users with definitive proof about the integrity of the process.
After reviewing various solutions, we selected Chainlink VRF because it’s based on cutting-edge academic research, supported by a time-tested oracle network, and secured through the generation and on-chain verification of cryptographic proofs that prove the integrity of each random number supplied to smart contracts.
Chainlink VRF works by combining block data that is still unknown when the request is made with the oracle node’s pre-committed private key to generate both a random number and a cryptographic proof. The Pirates World smart contract will only accept the random number input if it has a valid cryptographic proof, and the cryptographic proof can only be generated if the VRF process is tamper-proof. This provides our users with automated and verifiable assurances directly on-chain that the minting of rarity-based NFT Pirates and Ships is provably fair and was not tampered with by the oracle, outside entities, or the Pirates World team.
After users receive randomly generated NFTs and enter the in-game ecosystem, Chainlink VRF will also help power fully transparent results in expeditions, kraken attacks, and the random selection process in guild wars. Chainlink’s time-tested oracle infrastructure will also allow us to continue improving our Kraken Oracle, using Data Feed technology which works with geographically distributed, highly reputable, and independent node operator networks to help ensure high reliability. In the future, Chainlink Price Feeds can be used by Pirates World to enable seamless access to a robust price data source, giving us critical tools to balance and stabilize our in-game economy through a constant, dollar-pegged mining price for NFTs.
